Death of a party lover

I saw him across the room
And he winked at me, I looked the other way

The noise was too much for me
And he walked my way

He did not know how to write
His shirt said clam; I felt clammy

He started spouting compliments
They were an all eating shame and thriftless praise

He laughed. I admit laughed
He asked for my number, maybe

I said, if you’ve earned it by the end of the party
He tried, I guess, maybe

I didn’t him ever after, so I left
And I hoped my heart would recover

I saw him again at the cafe, three months later
And we laughed, and I thought maybe he’s not so bad

One year we were together
And in front of the school

Right there on campus
he asked me to marry him

I said yes
And he laughed me; to him
It was all just a joke
