The Shadow People

You care not for the people in the shadows;
The lonely, the hurt, and the desperate.
The sparkle in their eyes
And the joy in their smiles
Have long since faded away;
Only despair now remains.

With your glitz and glamour,
You overlook the shadow people;
Those who stand in the shadows,
Ignoring the day.

Seldom do their names cross your mind,
Of this, they are immensely aware;
They know that to you
They do not exist.

You disregard them and notice not,
That every day they are drawing nearer
To the day, they will decide
A bullet is better than air
And whisper goodbye
One last time.

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece after my friend revealed to me that she is battling with depression and self-harm. My hope is that those who my poem will begin to pay closer attention to the people around them become a light to those who are in desperate need of a friend.
