Peace and Quiet
Sinking down into the depths,
thrashing for air,
attempting to inflate your empty lungs.
The fire grows inside, demanding to be soothed.
Increasingly frigid water begins to burn your skin
with every inch that you slowly drift downward.
Alone you fight, but as exhaustion fills your body,
the end warps into a welcomed friend.
Your lungs are brimming with the liquid that
dragged you to the end, holding you with grip
like a child to it’s mother.
Consciousness slips away, leaving behind only
glimpses of a life. Portions of memories
bring happy thoughts as a smile
crawls across your face,
leaving joy in your final moments.
And at last
peace.
