We're Still Here
We are engulfed by uncertainty,
Gripped by the cold hands of what came before,
Icing over with fear of what is just out of sight.
Attempting to avoid the unavoidable.
Hiding from the things that call,
Running until what once propelled us begins to fade,
And our vision blurs.
We collapse, the last of the light draining from our veins
As the ice takes over, driving its frigid tendrils into our head
Sometimes we have no answers
We realize that,
Things happen, seemingly with no explanation.
And then we sit, watching the world as it darkens around us
While we bleed out all colors
Drain of all hope .
That’s just how things play out,
we’ll tell ourselves.
And as we sit and watch as our world is swallowed by heavy clouds,
Growing weak as the bleak haze clogs our lungs,
And our life slips through our freezing hands,
There is one thing that rests at the core of our thoughts
One faint, glow in the darkest night
A sad little flame that burns inside us
It flickers and sways, threatening to go out
But it never does.
It’s what melts the ice
And keeps away the blackness that surrounds us
And just when we thought all was lost
The flame grows brighter, and although it still flickers
It’s enough to shed light just ahead
The flame grows brighter still, and we follow what light we see
Unsure of what lies behind the edge of the dark
But no longer afraid.
What fuels that flame
Is nothing
It doesn’t exist
The flame is only a dream.
It's only what we make up
And as we hold our so called flame ahead of us
And trudge forward into the unknown reality
The truth becomes known to us,
There is no deeper reason to soldier on
Than the reason we create ourselves.
