Why does the shape of your body matter?
Why does the media encourage an unhealthy, unattainable look?
Why is
Thin
In?

Critiqued.
“Am I ugly for not looking like her?”
“It’s the inside that matters”
How do they believe what they preach?
“Am I fat?”

Mingled into a million minds, influential and afraid
Alternating perception like a disease
Infecting younger by year

“I want be just like her.”
Why not be just like you?
“She is beautiful.”
Why is she beautiful?

Weighed
Why try for a goal so dangerous?
Dragged behind like a daunting shadow
As you scroll,
Search,
Tweet,
Post.
Inescapable.

Measured.
“Your thighs look chubby today.”
That’s what she says every day.
“You’ll thank me later”
But you never do.

A set standard of American allure
Faces hallow
Tracing their bones
Just another clone
A walking hanger
A sickening pale

Judged.
Why don’t you want to be unique?
You are the only you.
How can we give love but not accept?
Is vanity an illness?
Is the media the brutal enemy?
Why would you want to change yourself to please others?
Isn’t your opinion of you the most important?
Why does beauty trump brains?

I wrote this for all the girls who struggle with accepting and loving their bodies, because you only get one body to live life in.
