Rachel
She made me smile from ear to ear,
as happiness radiated from her
like a ray from the sun.
She had no fear,
not even death could scare her.
She had been through it all by 5th grade.
Divorce, bullying, and sickness.
Still her bright smile wouldn’t fade.
When she gave me the bad news I didn’t worry at first,
she beat cancer once she could beat it again.
I didn’t think of the worst.
She is stronger than steel.
She could conquer this right?
A hospital became her new home,
four walls holding her hostage.
The single window wishing away her freedom.
Her spots weren't shrinking like they had before.
She didn’t have any more brown locks for her comb,
yet the balding spots couldn’t take her glow.
My phone buzzed on the couch.
I picked it up not thinking twice.
I say goodbye as I slouch.
No. This isn't right.
Ever feel your heart drop to the floor?
I have, more than I can count.
Like a knife buried deep in my core.
This was not what she deserved.
I throw my fist in the air as if to hit God in the face.
She was the sunlight on this gloomy earth and he took her from it.
The only light some of us had in this place.
Why her of all people?
She was carefree, hilarious, and strong.
If you looked up happiness in the dictionary you would find her name.
She inspired me and touched many.
Even in her small amount of time on earth
she changed it forever.
