The hunger conflicted throughout his stomach

as he watched the juicy burger

jump out at him. Propped up

between two seedless buns,

cheese, ketchup, lettuce, extra tomato

hold the pickles.

The medium sized package of salty, crispy fries overflowed

the small cardboard opening.

Two folded little boxes

buttermilk crusted chicken sandwich,

golden brown chicken nuggets

and ketchup packets.

The crunch as crisp as air

The aroma of it all

left quite the sensation

lingering in his mouth.

Just one taste of it all he thought

he almost couldn’t bare to wait much longer

happy meal, after happy meal, after happy meal

he waited.

Four piece nuggets and delicious caramel apple slices.

Children giggle with the excitement of a toy

little Power Rangers and one-eyed Planktons from Spongebob

soaring as mouths finally taste

the meal they’ve craved all day.

The boy was aggravated by the wait

for food that never showed

and toys he would never be able to use.

He longed for the taste of joy

that shared the filling warmth with everyone else except him.

Finally he caught view of his order that appeared as

bright as the waitress’s glowing eyes.

the gift that left a sting on his tongue.

A juicy burger, propped up

between two seedless buns,

cheese, ketchup, lettuce, extra tomato

hold the pickles.

The medium sized package of

salty, crispy fries overflowed

the small cardboard opening.

Two folded little boxes

buttermilk crusted chicken sandwich,

golden brown chicken nuggets

and ketchup packets.
The wait was over. He finally got his meal.

The author's comments:

I used to go to McDonald's a lot and typically the group of friends that I would order with would purchase multiple food items off of the menu but my orders were quite small. Most of the food I list in the poem are orders I have never ordered but rather orders that I have heard other people say aloud and that's what inspired me to write this piece. I hope to see that people will get that sometimes the things you want the most will become an addiction almost like everything around you becomes a part of your lifestyle. You can crave something so much even if it hurts you or your well-being, but you'd still want it.
