Jealousy
I used to know a someone
to whom I used to be a something.
But then she came along
and became a better something
than I could have ever been to them.
So I am no longer a someone
to the someone that was
my only someone.
But to them,
I’m just another someone
in a sea of potential someones.
I used to mean something
to someone who was something to me.
But then she came along
and swept away the something I had
and replaced my something
with a something considered more valuable.
So I’m no longer something
to they that was my something,
my only something.
But to them,
I’m just something unspectacular
in a world of spectaculars.
I used to be a someone
whom I used to know.
But then she came along
and became a better someone
than I ever could be.
So I am no longer a someone
that is the only someone
that I could ever be.
But to me,
I’m just another someone
washed out in a sea of nobodies.

This is a poem that I wrote for an assignment for my honors English class at school. In the spirit of A Separate Peace by John Knowles, we had to create a piece of writing to express jealousy, without using the word or any synonyms for it in the piece. I chose to take from personal experiences that have changed me over the last year and to adapt them into something much prettier than the scenarios are.
