An Ode to Charlie the Cat
Charlie Farley is a cat.
He isn't small, and isn't fat.
One day Charlie climbed inside
A circular box with more than one side.
If you're wondering how that's true,
I'm not sure, I was about to ask you.
Sometimes life doesn't make sense
And you shouldn't use cello bows to fence.
What really matters is couches and laps,
The two perfect places for long kitty naps.
If the time is late, then change the clock,
It's how you feel that matters, not the color of the sock.
The best time to write a thoughtless poem,
Is late at night when you're all alone
Hiding in bed with the covers pulled low
With an inkling of hope that the morning brings snow.
When you drive yourself crazy thinking too hard,
Spin round like a disco ball in your backyard
Till the ground decides to slap your face
And you return to the Earth, this funny place,
Where tulips grow on things called trees
And humans steal from honey bees.
Where critters have feelings, and wear things, like a shoe,
And say things from their mouths like I LOVE YOU.

This piece was written late at night, under the warmth of many blankets. It was originally written as most of my poems are - spontaneously and with no real rhyme or reason. Shortly after, it was dedicated to my friends' pet cat, Charlie, who passed away suuddenly and unexpectedly. It was read at his funeral.
