A Walk in the Woods
A Walk In The Woods
Somewhere deep in the Porcupine mountains
my brother and I trudged on,
we took a small side trail around a mud pit
created by the dreary drizzle earlier in the day.
Not aware that we had now changed course
heading down the wrong path
we continued on our way until we found a nice clearing to rest
where pine needles covered the ground and the trees towered us.
20 minutes passed
not one of my parents to be found.
We knew something was wrong, had something happened
we started back the way we came, yelling our parents names into the seemingly empty void
we quickened our pace, we began to worry
all we could do is hope nothing bad had happened, they were nowhere to be seen
we kept going yet no signs for anything appeared,
for a trail or our parents.
Finally we made our way to the split
this time truding through the mud pit only wanting to find our parents
this time passing the trail marker, and like that
we were off, running like the deer that roamed these woods.
Ducking under branches and jumping over logs, avoiding rocks and roots
all while slipping and sliding on the muddy earth
we ran down steep declines and hustled up impossible inclines.
At last we had made it to a real walking path,
not the ordinary trail in the woods
we knew our parents were close,
sprinting up the path to our final destination,
we spotted them at an overlook, stopping to take a break
they were unaware that we were behind them.
We spun the tale of our adventures
they laughed but they were happy that we had not been eaten by bears
we stayed at the Lake of the Clouds overlook and enjoyed the views
then we packed into the car and headed our long journey home.
