Mirrors
I remember the first thing Lindy said to me that night.
She said, can’t you see them.
Can’t you see the monsters in the shadows?
The monsters in the mirrors?
What are you talking about I asked.
She laughed.
Not her laugh.
A high, inhuman cackle.
Not Lindy.
They’re laughing at you, did you know that?
Lindy calm down,
You must just be tired,
you need some rest.
She grinned, eyes wild, teeth gnashing.
They said I’m supposed to….
She trailed off,
That wicked grin still tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Supposed to what Lindy I said, supposed to WHAT?!
She giggled like a 5 year old.
Oh you’ll see she said, you’ll see.
I did see then.
I saw the knife glinting in the moonlight.
I saw the scarlett blood on Lindy’s hands.
I saw the blade flash toward my head just before I ducked.
And I saw Lindy disappear out of thin air.
Everyone thinks I’m crazy when I tell them.
But they’re the crazy ones.
The monsters come for everyone you see.
One day they’ll come for you too.
They hide in the corners,
In that time between day and night,
In the people you think you know
The people you think you can trust.
On the day they come for you
You will know.
Maybe you’ll see Lindy.
Tell her Hi for me, won't you?
