Who I'm From
I am from a mother who worked and worried
with the night shift at the hospital
And the father who played by ear
with the short days in the office
that turned into long nights in the bar
I am from childhood friends
That continue to hold presence in my life
(Like the girl with epilepsy
Who taught me that being different
Should never be a burden)
I am from insecurity and uncertainty
And the mentors I’ve met
Who have taught me
To always be proud of who I am
Not disappointed with what I am not
I am from an amazing group of people
Who have impacted me in only the best ways
Whose kindness and compassion
Have aided me through the worst
And guided me through the best
And I could never ask for more.
After George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From”.
