the painted tarp underfoot
and bright lights overhead
gloves embracing my hands
and dance shoes hugging my feet.
smiling smiling smiling
i grip the cold metal pole
as the music drifts through the gym.
i look up look up look up
even though the music cuts
holding my position.
waiting waiting waiting
until coach yells “reset”
and I set to do it all again
