She was born with a pencil in her hand
Always knew she needed to write to live
Created the people she wanted to be
Drew the things she wished surrounded her
Making worlds in her head to escape her own
Was only seven years old and forced to grow up

Little girl, little girl cries all alone
Sobbing in her bedroom waiting for someone
Hoping they would come and take her away
Hoping Superman would save the day
Little girl, little girl different from the rest
She has a heavy heart weighing down her chest
Nothing is quite what it seems to be
Everything’s changing and she needs to believe
That Superman would come and take her away
That Superman would come and save the day

She’s lying in the dark trapped inside her own head
She won’t tell them but she wishes she were dead
Anxiety’s the only thing in her mind
She wants to find a way to leave this world behind
The hospital’s barren, white, and cold
She isn’t getting better like she was told

Worried girl, worried girl cries all alone
Waiting for the cure that will never come
Hoping it will come and take her away
Hoping Superman would save the day
Worried girl, worried girl looking for a home
She’s wandering in the dark, doesn’t know where to go
What medicine could cure her disease?
It’s in her head; it’s her OCD
Please don’t let it take her away
Please let Superman come and save the day

She goes back to school and has a good year
She falls in love but it ends in tears
What boy could ever learn to love
A girl who’s never ever enough
Or maybe she’s way, way too much
Maybe she doesn’t deserve his love
Broken girl, broken girl cries all alone
Wishing for a boy who doesn’t even know
That she hopes he will come and take her away
She hopes Superman will save the day
Broken girl, broken girl doesn’t know the truth
About ruined hearts and what a boy can do
She hopes he’ll come and take her away
She hopes Superman will save the day

School is the endless struggle between
What your grades are and girls who are mean
They make fun of her and the quirky things she does
They don’t know she feels like she’s not good enough
Confidence is hard to build but easily lost
Insecurity is a cliff and she’s fallen off

Different girl, different girl cries all alone
She doubts everything that she has ever done
And she hopes Superman will take the pain away
She hopes Superman will save the day
Different girl, different girl wishing for a life
A dream, a new beginning, a beautiful light
She hopes Superman will take her away
She hopes Superman will save the day

Supergirl, Supergirl figures it out on her own
She never really needed anyone
She didn’t need Superman to take her away
She was the one who could save the day
Supergirl, Supergirl has words and a voice
To work hard and be a hero was her own choice
She doesn’t need Superman to take her away
I am the one who will save the day
I am Supergirl and I found a way

The author's comments:

'Superman' is autobiographical and about my struggles with OCD and anxiety. I hope it will help other kids with anxiety disorders realize that they aren't alone and that can 'save' themselves.
