On Living With An Invisible Illness
My body is the best magician I have ever seen
With an invisibility cloak for every disease
I bet you didn't know
until I told you
Now your eyes search for answers to what you just heard
No scars, crutches or casts
No tubes, bruises or masks
You’re taken aback
It doesn’t match what you know and so you doubt it
One of them has to be a lie but it isn’t
You can't explain it
And the magician will never reveal its secrets

I have lived with an invisible illness, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome for the last five years. It is an illness that effects nearly every system of the body, but shows very few external signs. This is one way I want to share just how it feels to know that everyone thinks you aren't as sick as you really are, and to think before they speak out against someone who looks perfectly healthy using a handicapped spot, wheelchair, or cane.
