Human Value
Reclining at the round table,
they put prices on
us,
on our paper packets that mask
the all-nighters,
the tears,
the broken friendships,
the psychiatrists,
the time and joy depleted
for weekends in the study,
for playing the sport
you never even enjoyed,
for learning to play
the instrument of fear and anxiety
that won you the first-place trophy
in the musical competition of burning bridges and
self-abasement—
you’re still worth a
rejection, though.
What is there to live for
if the endeavor
is more expensive
than you are?
