"People are screwed up in this world. I'd rather be with someone screwed up and open about it than somebody perfect and ready to explode." - Ned Vizzini, It's Kind of a Funny Story

Deep in my toes
I taste the magnetic metal field of the
moon’s lunar craters clinging to their lover
and I want to drink the sweet
elixir of eternity, to become
intoxicated with galaxies of stretch marks
and the way people’s tongues brush the tops
of their mouths when they laugh.

When I wake,
the sunset is the first thing
to flit across my eyelids and
I can almost see the outline of
death against the farewell of our dying
star, the inevitability of our sun’s death
looming over us like a
childhood tantrum.
I’ve seen
girls kiss the pavement outside instead of boys
and waltz through fields of suicidal tendencies,
picking different methods
like daisies in a wheat field.
They wonder if heaven exists
but never get the chance to find out.

Your toes match mine and we dance with
our bare feet pressed together,
moving up and down like the keys of a piano
to a song sung to the tune of
morning eyes and drowsy smiles.
we clutch to old friends like morning dew,
then sing them funeral hymns
before they can leave us for
roads we’re too afraid to drive down.
