Heroes Kill Monsters

The snake-haired girl looks up at your reflection,
eyes of death now full of pleading.
'A choice,' the gray-eyed goddess whispers in your ear.
A choice, a swing, a slice – your mother saved.
Is that not what you wanted?

The sword feels heavy in your hand
when before it'd seemed so light.
It should be easy – heroes kill monsters, right?
The snake-haired girl looks up at your reflection,
eyes of death now full of pleading.

She used to be so beautiful, they say,
that all men and gods desired her;
now her sultry gaze turns
all men and gods to stone –
now isn't that a fair exchange?

Another woman beautiful
waits for you at home, and needs
the snake-haired girl's petrifying power.
The pleading eyes so full of death are closed.
'Why then do you hesitate?'

A sword is raised,
two breaths are breathed,
three fates collide.
Your mother saved, a weapon won –
a choice is all you wanted.

Based, of course, on the myth of Perseus and Medusa. Question is, does he kill her?
