“He liked the mere act of reading, the magic of turning scratches on a page into words inside his head.” - John Green (An Abundance of Katherines)

We're all just children

Spending our time trying to be heard.

Posting a picture, adding a caption

Waiting for likes, growing attraction.

We waste our lives behind our phone screens

Sometimes being beneficial, but often

Pulling our eyes away from the beauties of nature,

Pulling our ears away from the sounds of creation,

And pulling our senses away from aspects of love and association.

We no longer know the feeling of confusion

For with the click of a button, we have search engines.

We no longer know the feeling of discovery

For there are people out there who have already done so for us.

Maybe that is the reason why we spend so much time

Building an image for ourselves;

Hoping that someone will comment,

"I admire everything that you do.

Please continue. I will support you."

Maybe that is the reason why the world seems to rotate so rapidly.

We crave those basic human emotions

That technology strips away

While we are willing to clear all ends of the earth

And eventually, leave it bare.

We are imprisoned by the need to share the depths of our minds,

The need to shout and clear the lumps in our throats,

And the need to fit in to hide our scars and empty feelings.

We really are all just children

Our maturity hidden modernly by self-esteem.

The author's comments:

Technology is an important part of society, for it is what has brought mankind to a level of power that appears impossible without it. However, with technology comes an uneven balance of positive and negative consequences. With personalities hidden behind smartphones, status updates, and selfies, it becomes hard to set devices aside and truly appreciate what nature and face-to-face communication has to offer. I hope this poem gives others the motivation to turn off their computers and phones, step outside, and think about their physical impact on the world.
