Boston Molasses Flood of 1919
We mourn the lives of 21
150 were injured.
The damage is done.
On that day that, sunny, glorious day
January 5th, 1919
A flood of molasses made the headlines
Could have been prevented,
If the government didn’t ignore the signs.
A wave of molasses shot up 25 feet high,
While chaos erupted under the big blue sky.
Houses were demolished,
Toddlers were crying,
Mother were sobbing,
Hold sons that were dying.
But why did it happen?
And who is to blame?
Will someone speak up-
This isn’t a game!
Lie after lie,
Conceiving the truth
Of what really happened on that day.
When mothers sent out their children to play.
For a warm gentle sun
Had kissed off promises ahead
Of better days
Yet 21 ended up dead.
And 150 were injured,
That’s by far too many lives ruined or gone,
Would you be crying now…?
If it had been your son?
WAIT.
HOLD THAT THOUGHT.
Maybe just maybe
Together
we can
Turn one negative
Into a reflecting positive.
You know that quote?
Yeah, that one. By George Santayana.
"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"
Well study your history,
Study it hard.
And remember that by not learning from mistakes we are likely to repeat them.
Because you never know; if a wave of molasses seemed impossible then, way back in 1919,
And yet it still happened
Who’s to say the same isn’t impossible in our generation?
“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”
-George Santayana

I wrote this in the 8th grade when we read an article in language arts class about the flood that occured in Boston during 1919. It shocked me to think that a molasses tank killed people, but it actually happened. And it's crazy to think how easily it could have been prevented.
