Big City
bulbs of light flicker in the sky
the pitter-patter of tainted dreams and drizzled rain sounds
taste the instantaneous regret on the tip of your tongue
in this big city
pools and puddles collect in armies
they're emptied by the one that needs endlessly
neon signs illuminated your smile before it vanished
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
prying umbrellas are stood on end
they reach out further than their owners can
signs lead you the other way
in this big city
blue spotlight shines on your face
as you take your throne on the stage
and gaze into the deep sea of eyes that peer at you
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
standing alone on a street corner, shivering
looking for your golden ticket, desperately
the search ends soon, far too soon
in this big city
rest your head where it may lay, wherever it will be
rest your eyes when you need them most
but never rest your instinct, you'll need it
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
look both ways before crossing roads
on one side is the future, the other is the past
living only for today won't grant you a tomorrow
in this big city
black and blue is a new trend
set it, get it and forget it
it is impossible to resist and then persist
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
a picture is only a picture if you see it so
a story can be the truth to you
the things they show you are flat
in this big city
the pane of glass is a window to the soul
it shows a beating heart that rushes and thrives with life
many a path will cross with collisions
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
beauty only appears when all around is dark
there is nothing to compare and no argument to present
but at the strike of night, glowing surges fill the void that is the sky
in this big city
the constant chatter of loudest souls is deafening
however, quiet when you can challenge it
don't expect to lay your head into deep slumber
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
sheep here are herded from a screen
the dots of light are all but small in their wrath
many things you'd think are insignificant loom over you and control you
in this big city
on the paths that carry a traveller's weight
intoxicated and changed a man, he is
but there is no way to deny the hijacks of your mind
in this big city
your hopes are built on a metal frame
your lives are built on a concrete tower
here comes the earthquake of judgement
only typical in this big city
earlier than most start to care
the roads are paved for no-one in particular
but the night-owls continue to prowl, never stopping, never sleeping
in this big city
you are cheated, beaten and broken when you leave
but you part with only the things that were worth too much to take
and that, I observe, is the reason no-one has the will to leave
in this big city

It's probably the longest thing I've ever written. It kind of grew over time.
