Only Us
It’s only us
But we could rule the world someday
We are beat, broken and used but we are still breathing
They tear us apart but we stay close
We are one, we are us
When you fall, I take your hand in mine and hold it tightly
When I am breaking you try to piece me together
You try and I try and together we try to make everything better
You and I, we know that it gets better
When the rain decides to come
We decide to go and we will
Even when we have nowhere to go and nowhere to be
You and I, we know that there is always somewhere
When the birds sing
You will listen and I will watch you
Their songs are only for you, calling to you
You and I, we know who is talking to us
You are just a poor boy
Your story lives on in burning memories
Poor boys are left and then they leave
Yet, you and I, we have never left nor ever arrived
It’s only us and only us it is
When leaves are green
The sky is a brilliant, piercing blue that shines through the treetops
We might just take a moment to see it all
You and I, we know what life is
When the table is bare
The faces are blanker yet
I know to look to your eyes in consolation
You and I, we want it all but need nothing
I was just a rich girl
The girl with the hair that shone and voice that shrilled
My footsteps are all but erased and no longer do I belong
Yet, you and I, we never forget and never need remember
It’s only us, and only us is how it has always been
The days melt and churn into years
My eyes are met with us and the bridges we made
But more importantly, they meet your eyes
They still see me when no-one seems to
You and I, we are strong
We know that it is almost better
We’ll wait for the storm to pass
Before we step out into the sun
And perhaps that is why we still stand
Years after these buildings have tired and slept
The dust and the wind blows over our faces, sealed in stone
It’s only us, but we’ve changed the world

Inspired by the amazing Regina Spektor song, "Us".
