All the wonders that you see,
But cannot yet speak of:
You will find
Many words to express them.
Slow down now,
For you will eventually wear glasses,
From reading three languages.

Hear the crunch of the leaves
As your prized light-up shoes
Plunge into the newly raked pile of
Red, yellow, and the inevitable brown.
I know you think it’s so cool to use the leaf blower
But slow down now,
For when your voice grows deeper,
You’ll have to rake the leaves,
And watch enviously as your little brother
Jumps into that inviting pile.

You beg your parents to stay up later at night
Perhaps you want to finish that drawing
Or coerce your robot into one more step
Slow down now,
For when your shoe size matches your dad’s
All you’ll want to do is sleep
While your eyes glaze over probability and velocity.

Your eyes light up at the intricacy of circuits
Asking so many questions
Where does the series begin?
Where does it end?
Slow down, slow down
For when your fingers have been scarred by solder
You will learn the answers that generate more questions
but for now
Ponder on,
Dream on.

When you a child, you can't wait to grow up. But now, as a teenager, I want to tell my younger self to slow down and enjoy the wonder and joy of childhood.
