Difference
Difference-something relative,
Whether kindling or sedative.
In eyes that see through sickly-sweet gauze,
See no evil, and have no cause.
Ignorance-a drug giving sought-after bliss
A gunshot, a murder; gone, but sealed with a kiss.
The string between worlds stretches into a thread
as one after another is pronounced dead.
And when these twinges of guilt give way to a war,
a drop now an ocean, disaster let pour,
The thread between will start to pull taut.
My dear, forsake what you have been taught.
The color of people, or with whom men’s love lies,
Two types of rainbows, both where hate is derived.
Volatile, crackling, ready to pop.
Storefronts shatter, guns fire, hearts drop.
Midnights flare up with passion for rights
Lit up with fire, in all ways burning bright.
This delicate thread, keeping order in pieces
Pulling people together who know not what peace is.
A delicate thread, as short as a life.
Holding husband to husband, holding wife to wife.
Holding colors together, keeping “other” with white.
And if this thread breaks, believe me, my friend.
All hell will break loose, it might well seem the end.
If nobody chooses to see and realize
the distortions taught to their vulnerable minds,
Disaster will strike, vicious yet charming,
Giving one their desires, to others harming.
Difference-something relative.
Someone living the way they have chosen to live.
And maybe someday, no more harm will we give,
But the knowledge of love, knowledge how to forgive.

This poem is my way of expressing my opinions on the recent (and not-so-recent) controversy over discrimination based on both race and sexual orientation. Several of my friends have been affected by these, so this topic was very close to me.
