heads will roll
heads will roll in paris,
heads will roll in nice,
heads will roll across the land,
and line the bloody streets.
heads will roll in baskets,
heads will roll in fields,
heads will roll where men of strength
great heavy swords shall wield.
heads will roll from nobles' necks,
heads will roll from priests',
heads will roll from peasants', too --
not last, but always least.
pity the necks of kings and queens,
all collared and bejeweled.
for trusting their people's loyalty,
they were the better fooled.
heads will roll from thrones of gold,
blood will rain from heaven;
heads will roll from the necks of those
who took them of their brethren.

This is a piece inspired by the Reign of Terror, the traumatic period during the French Revolution, wherein the guillotine was popularly used to behead political enemies and general dissenters of the revolution. It addresses not only the horrors of the executions, but also the "come-uppance" received by supporters of this method -- namely Maximilien Robespierre.
