Small Things in Life
The smallest things can make us happy,
The first bite of ice cream on a burning hot day.
Looking up at the sky and seeing the storm has cleared away.
A kiss on the head from someone you love,
Waking up to the sound of a mourning dove.
And knowing you have no school,
or making that first jump into the pool.
The smallest things can make us happy,
The things that come free,
and the great love that my mother gives me.
The way he looks deep in your eyes,
How that feels like a new kind of paradise.
Although sometimes we take these things for granted,
Like not appreciating how his laugh made you feel so enchanted.
The smallest things can make us sad,
Checking the phone and seeing that you didn’t call.
Forgetting you, the good times and all.
Watching his old car drive out of the driveway,
Remembering things you never had the chance to say.
Not telling him exactly how you felt,
And watching that ice cream melt.
The smallest things can make us sad,
The rain storm continues through a cold day,
Feeling great guilt, that just won’t go away.
The look in your parents eyes of disappointment,
Going through the letters you wrote but never sent.
Ending the phone call with someone you haven't seen,
Watching the news and constantly asking why the world is so mean.
The feelings come, and the feelings go,
Just like a storm or even an echo.
There are things in this world that can tear us down,
But we have to stand up and accept the crown.
The crown of strength that shows how we were able to overcome tragedies big or little.
The crown that will turn into a halo and because we were everything but noncommittal.
We stood tall and loved one another no matter how hard,
We learned to laugh it off, to let down our guard.
There are feelings of happiness and of sadness in this world,
Feelings that all of us experience, feelings we just can’t withhold.
