I am Mute
I am so lucky to be mute.
The doctors call it a handicap,
But I don’t see it that way.
I observe how many people are mean to each other,
They yell
Talk over each other
And make meaningless noises just to annoy those around them.
Those same people,
They act quite different when they talk to me.
I try not to laugh
When well meaning people talk very slow, and very loud.
I’m not deaf,
And I understand what they say.
But it’s funny how they try and accommodate me.
They wait patiently when I type my answers on the computer,
Or talk through my sign language interpreter.
Some people look so intently at me,
Its as though they think that caring about me,
Will cure me.
That just isn’t gonna happen.
I’m glad that I can’t yell at people.
I’m glad that I don’t have to share meaningless conversation.
I do teach people a little bit about my world,
When I show them how to say I love you,
With their hands.
People call me an inspiration,
Because I have done so much without having a voice.
My world is very full,
And my life is complete.
I do sometimes wish I could sing.
