Get ready, get set, run.
I am hispanic.
That means many things
I can understand spanish
I eat hispanic food
My skin color is darker
But with being hispanic also comes
stereotypes
discrimination
It makes me ask myself "Why Am I So Brown?" (Cool Salsa 109)
It almost makes me feel like I should be ashamed
of my culture
of my family
of the way I look
But I remind myself,
"God made you brown, color bronze
to wear as a crown for you are royalty" (Cool Salsa 109)
Every hispanic person runs into discrimination
at least once
or twice
in their life
Even my mom told me in high school her councilor
told her that she would never become a nurse
"her voice carved the sky" (Hispanic American Literature 131)
Luckily, my mom did not take no for an answer
she got through college and is now a certified nurse
Hispanics as a whole have to stick together
fight the stereotypes
show others than we can do it just like everyone else
we can be just successful as the next person
so come on, young generation "Get ready, Get set, Run" (Cool Salsa 227)
