A link to the past
The distinct connection between my childhood and video games.
For as long as I can remember
We’ve had a super nintendo.
My dad got it for 10$
from the son of a family he worked for
whom I know only by the name
“Garrett”
The concept that he no longer owned these games
was not lost on me
but I knew that he still maintained a connection
deep within the cartridge.
He’d imprinted himself
inside of every game that we owned
which were formerly his.
I never met this him
but I felt some connection with him.
A similar connection to my namesake
Michael G.
Who died in an accident
in 1995.
I could always picture Michael’s death
even though i wasn’t there
or alive
but somehow his story
stayed within my mind
ever since i first heard it.
I don’t believe in reincarnation
at least not anymore
but i feel a connection with him
that i can’t explain.
The idea of him is rooted
deep within my subconscious
a link to that era
a link to the past.

I was wrote this piece after reading the works of Lydia Davis in my English class. I felt inspired to write something in her style of freeverse poetry, and this was the first piece that I really enjoyed writing, and reading reflectively afterwards. I realize that the term "link to the past" is the title of a video game for SNES, and that's what I'm refrencing.
