Eagles

I was in pursuit of eagles
Something amazing
pleasant
exciting
I found empty trees
and then there was an eagle
Just out of reach
And life was darker than it needed to be
and there were certainly no eagles
but
One day in a sidewalk crack
there were tiny white flowers reaching up
their stems the size of threads
their petals bursting with hope and springtime
and those flowers became my friends
and that seems ludicrous but
I loved it
Wishing for eagles
Found only empty trees
