Ode to a Marshmallow
Sweet white
Purity
Smooth little cylinders of
Sugar.
Wiggling,
Quivering
Little babies
New to the world
Only to disappear
Leaving no trace,
Gobbled up by
Waiting mouths.
Dry white tiny
Clouds,
But sickly sweet
Like the guilt that gnaws
The niggling in the pit of your stomach,
Because you ate one too many
That secret you shouldn’t have told
That last marshmallow you shouldn’t have eaten
Once so innocent and fun
Now painful and wrong
You can’t bear to look at it,
Lest you eat another
Bite.
