Listening on the beach
I am sitting here, alone, behind the hedge row. There are red flowers blooming, a bee flys lazily onto one. It is sucking up the energy and life before it moves on to another. I look up at the tree above me, I hear the leaves rustling in the ocean breeze. I smell something fresh, I look to the ocean to find the source, but there is nothing for as far as I can see but a small island off the coast. I look down and see a line of ants carrying a small piece of plum towards a giant ant hill about 15 feet away. I wonder how long this will take them and how much of an accomplishment it is. A page of a book floats by in the wind, I wonder about the stories contained in the book. I close my eyes and listen to the world. I realize how loud everything is in this quiet little place. I realize how much is going on around me that I cannot see, how much I have missed.
