Mentally Ill

Walking, walking, walking
Bumping into people
Kids yelling and pencils soaring
Chest gets tight
Can’t breathe
Thoughts are racing
Can’t make out a single word
Hands tremble and knees shake
No one’s noticing

Walking, walking, walking
Tears form and fall like daggers.
People turn and talk to you
Words are lost in the air
Can’t hear anything
Can’t focus
Feet trip over each other
Thinking of blades dancing across skin
Dots of red blooming in their path

Stumble, trip, fall
Ropes tied and pills spilled
Wanting to end it all
Can’t talk
Can’t speak
Can’t even think
Only sobbing
Everything’s muddled
Nothing makes sense

No more walking now
Somehow time has passed
Riding on a gurney
Sirens wailing
People talking
Harsh lights burn closed eyelids
Antiseptic floods nose
Can’t move at all
Still can’t think

Lying in a white bed
In a white gown
In a white room
Doctors come and go
Asking weird questions
Want to sleep
Must sleep
Won’t let you sleep
Time passes slowly

Walking, walking, walking
You enter a new room
More kids
Lots of kids
All of them your age
Some of them are smiling
Others ignoring
Doctors scattered
You feel alone

Sitting down twenty-four seven
Terrifying words heard repeatedly
Bipolar, suicidal, self-harm
Bipolar, suicidal, self-harm
Bipolar, suicidal, self-harm
Always, always, always
Never ending, never stopping
Always heard constantly

Moving now
Time passes, people leave
Soon you’re gone too
Trees went from green
To orange
And yellow
And red
Without your knowing
The world has transformed

Sitting, walking, always moving
More therapy, more doctors
Tons of medication
Yet harmful thoughts vanish
Blades no longer dance
Emotions being to stabilize
Happiness is a new idea
Isn’t this so weird?

Laughing, skipping, dancing
The world seems born new
Depression is nonexistent and mania is controlled
Happiness is constant and feelings are explored
Medication is reduced and therapy is easier
You have been born new
