Basic
As I sit in my room contemplating a poem that is due tomorrow,
I question why creativity is not coming to me.
Is it me,
Or is it the lack of social skills that accompany my generation today?
There are so many things inside of me that I want to express,
But life’s tribulations have depressed my imagination.
What used to be elevated by culture is now compressed by media
Because being creative is different,
And being different is socially unacceptable.
I refuse to be someone I’m not,
And veil my own imagination.
I refuse to be basic,
Because basic is basically belittling my beliefs.
So as I sit here in my room
Wondering why creativity isn't coming to me
I realize that I was taught by a culture
That only teaches you the basics.
