Books fill up my room.
Not baseball cards,
or pictures of girls,
or basketballs.
Maybe a blown up picture of …
… Pam Anderson might help.

Black-framed glasses
and a white,
pale,
lanky
body.
I should start working out.

At least I can read.
I read four books a day last summer.
The librarian,
80-year-old Mrs. Woodsworth,
she knows my middle name.
If only I had a real friend.
I am sick of seeing her old,
bony,
pale body.
Although it resembles mine.

The kids at school laugh.
Is it the way I dress?
Lacoste,
Ralph Lauren,
La Tigre.
I’ve tried every designer out there.
Staying in the house really saves me money.
My stupid rich parents give me $50 a week for lunch.
$50 times 36 weeks …
what is that?
$1,000,
$2,000,
$10,000?
I should probably know.
Straight A’s 12 years in a row
and counting.

With all of this,
or none of this –
it depends how you look at it –
all I need is a friend.

So, I keep coming back to this poem again and again. I like it. It says so much... and it makes you feel so much.

I hope this isn't a really personal question, but is this an actual experiance (forgive the spelling, I am a bit tired.) that you have gone through, if so, I can really relate, and I am willing to make a new friend any day, keep up the good work!

I ama soloist (is that even a word) but this peacce is fimaliar to every one. Kinda a basic instinct that makes sense to every one.

i know you like honesty so here goes everything, i see why this peice was put in the mag-not that i'm a strong advocate for friendship or any sort of human contact but i love the concept behind this one, that is, assuming i understand it fully. it was worded perfectly and if you want to change it you're an idiot. sike. do your dance captain.

This has been my favorite free verse so far. I can really connect, I feel as if I'm not living a normal teen's life.

beautiful...i can connect with this poem...not that im all that rich..but i have the inabilty to hear without my hearing aid...thus many frinds drift away from me. ..

yes i have friends..many of them....but they r not my true friends..... they only help me only out of pity........
