When I was young
My brain was washed in holy water
Hung up to dry and stuffed full of
            false accusations
Reincarnations of age old thought
And left to rot there
            in the Garden of Eden
Without ever seeing the light of day
And every way I looked was a
            dead end
I couldn’t pretend anymore
Every door I tried was jammed
My brain was crammed with venom
            and saints’ medicine
I was destined to run
Born to flee the ancient city
Locked inside an archaic Bethlehem
which did not satisfy my thirst
The ground was dry and
the plants were dying of dehydration
I begged for an escape and
The first time I stepped outside
I cried
When I saw what had been lost
in all my years of waiting
Inside the sky high walls of this ancient city
I pitied myself for not having tasted the
Forbidden Fruit
sooner
My eyes were opened and I saw the ruin
of the Dead Garden that raised me
The corruption to which I was blinded
and I was reminded of the promise
I’d made with my eyes closed
and I rose
from my sedated state
I hated to see the Holy Ground of my youth
turned to dust in my eyes
but the disguise couldn’t hold forever
and I never returned
to the Garden
