And here’s hoping for a better day; it could be tomorrow.
And this week’s police reports are as follows:
Gas station robbed just off 4th street
The place lost six hundred dollars and some lunch meat
Two people off highway 51 were sent to jail for harassment
Two dumb kids who couldn't stay out of people’s basements
Should have locked their doors tighter
Or got a dog who’s a better fighter
And here’s this year first murder
And it’s a sad thing to see
Pray every day “It won’t be me.”
A man walking home from a hard day’s work
With no money in his wallet because his boss is a jerk
Turned down the wrong street
And ran into some people you wouldn't want to meet
Took his phone and his jacket
Then stabbed him.

But the news doesn't end there
The headlines go farther
Could you feed three kids without even a father?
How much food does a police report cover?
How much rent does each eye that views give to the mother?
And here’s tonight’s news:
An apartment fire on 2nd avenue
Corrupt politicians stealing all your tax revenue
Restaurant closed due to poor ventilation
Budget cuts limit your child’s education
Drunk driver hit a pedestrian; that’s an abomination
Two dead after late night altercation
One plead guilty by association
One on the run after murder by suffocation
Now all this bad news has caused the circulation
Of the great humiliation
The violent automation
Of our actions that will cause the great asphyxiation
Of the younger generation
Telling them that it’s ok by affirmation
To kill, loot and steal because of desperation
Because one day the father there to say “no”
Will have died last week because he turned down the wrong street.
Goodnight,
America.

The inspiration for this poem came from curent events. I like to pay attention to the world around me and this is what came to me. A growing sense of desperation and urgency should be felt as the poem reaches its conclusion.
