The Magic of Music
The first note rings
Cutting through the silence like an arrow slicing air
Slowly the stage swells with harmony
Each note weaving and soaring and creating and swaying
a tapestry of undiluted sound
The melody takes on a life of its own
Weeping and prancing and laughing and stomping
for who can predict the unpredictable?
The new tones clash and fight and triumph
yet no one can truly win
Soon you are no longer standing there
The stage has long since disappeared beneath your feet
Instead of spotlights you are free
from the pressure of life, the soul crushing strain
Mountains rise up through the mist
Caused by a crescendo of waves on rocks
Birds soar through untamed skies while below
Horses thunder by tangled dense forests
Time soon does pass yet unaware
The tune is now reaching it’s closure
Stars riddle the sky as the sun now sets
The song has reached it’s end
The last note rings

When I wrote this piece I wanted to convey how it felt for me to preform onstage. This year, my middle school band went to the Midwest Clinic in Chicago and I wanted to share how it felt from the very first note to the moment the song died off. Being onstage often gives me a chance to escape from the turmoil of everyday life as well as giving me time to reflect on problems left otherwise untouched.
