The Apocalypse
You think I can’t hear you
So when did ‘I love you’
Turn into
Running like we have
Something to live for
When did it start
To mean
Something substantial
Like we actually
Mattered
Love doesn’t save you
With blood running
Down your face
Torn and broken like a
Mangled star
Fallen from heaven
Amongst the burned out
Buildings and ashen pits
That the Hell’s Fire brings
I thought it was a simple
Thing like ‘I’ll protect you’
Not like that could
Happen
But as we lie
Bleeding
Next to each other in the
Failing light
I gently caress your face
Though the scent of your
Blood stirs fire inside my
Veins
But even that animalistic
Urge has been purged
From me
Remind me how this
Happened please
I want the last thing
I hear to be
Your voice
--------------------------------
It started when you came to
The lab for the first time
Boy with his father
--I’m sorry
You were so wide eyed and
Naïve back then
I was forbidden from
Seeing you
Being the thing that I
Still am
You met the others
I know
Ariden
Mish
Teylar
And Bel
You wondered why we were
There
With our strange names
And
Though you didn’t know
Impossible existences
Back when you thought that
We were still human
Ariden
The boy who knows
What you will do
Even before you do
Mish
She can get anything out of
Anyone
Secrets of seduction and
A master intellect
Teylar
Known for his instinct
In the survival of the fittest
He only has one competitor
Bel
Sweet Bel
She’ll use any weapon
Against you
She knows how
You did ask about me
Though
‘Why is she like that’
--Even then you cared
Ariden never told you what I
Am
Did he
You had to find out yourself
The scientists told you to
Befriend us
Or rather
Find our weakness
So that’s what you did
Befriend us
I mean
The others accepted you
Not without trial
Of course
--I can still see where they
--Cut your skin
That’s how I knew who you
Were
They gave me your blood
I watched you
You know
To me
You were pathetic
A twig that could be
Broken with a single touch
Not worth my time
But you met me
Grabbed my wrist as I
Walked by
I almost ripped out your
Ribcage
I think you knew
Too
Because you backed away
But then you smiled
A real smile
You were the only human
Who had smiled
At me in a long time
So I allowed you to live
‘What is your name’
I don’t have a name
Per say
But Mish and Ariden
Call me ‘TZ’
I guess it means something
So that is what I told you
‘My name’s Alec’
You said
‘Why are you talking to me’
I didn’t think any human
Could care about me
You said you were being
Friendly
While I had no knowledge of
The concept
But over the next few
Months
I let you get closer to me
And me to you
--It was a beautiful mistake
Yet those months were
Some of the best this
Short life has lived
Teylar and Bel
They said I was better
They were nicer starting
Then
We were happy
I was more stable then than
Any other time
Just a group of friends
We looked like
Teenagers that should be
Seen in a mall
Not an experimental lab
But we couldn’t leave
While you could
But when you were there
We laughed
In a place where no soul
Should have to go
To go through what we
Went through
We laughed
And then you told me
‘I love you’
And I didn’t mind
And somewhere in me
I let myself say
‘I love you too’
We started doing what
You called
‘Couple stuff’
Holding hands
Just being together
The scientists said it was
Extraordinary
That I had progressed this
Far
I could develop
Relationships
But you saw me as more
Than a chemical reaction
With a number
A person
With a right to live
And we could only get closer
Totally in love with each
Other
The others laughed at us
‘Lovebirds’ and
‘Hopeless’
They called us
We laughed along with
Them
Because there was no
Harm
And they meant none
But the scientists wanted to
See how far we could go
And because you couldn’t
Defy orders
And I didn’t care
That’s what we did
Stolen moments in an
Empty hallway
And once
Lost inhibitions in the
Dead of the night
But even after all that
We acted the same
Just happy to be in the
Same room
Because that’s what
Mattered
But that’s when everything
Went wrong
One of those idiots cut
Themselves when
Examining me
That’s when it happened
Every impulse
Every urge
I had been holding it all
Back
The idiot just stood there
Frozen
I guess he didn’t realize
He never got the chance
I ripped his spine out first
I’ll spare you the rest
You will never believe me
When I tell you how
Magnificent is the taste
Of fear stained blood
Six more were dead before
I even left the room
Our friends were the only
Ones smart enough to get
Away from me
They had seen what I was
Capable of
You hadn’t
Three more joined the
Bodies on the floor
But you still stood there
Trying to reason with me
Stupid
When you fell
Your cheek was cut on
The table
That’s what saved you
Because when I tasted your
Blood
It was you
And I walked away
Your father wanted me
Executed on the spot
But you fought for me
Saying I only was acting on
What they did to me
‘Kill them all then’
He didn’t want anyone to
Know
That I can understand
But when that badly aimed
Bullet went
Through my skin
All I felt was a pinch
In my right arm
Even my own blood could
Revive the insanity in me
I killed your own father
Right in front of you
--I am so sorry
But then I woke up
And I broke
You held me
Told me it would be okay
Even after that
How could you
Where did the strength
Come from
And our friends
Ariden
Mish
Teylar
And Bel
They said the same thing
This wasn’t my fault
But it
Was
But none of you would
Let me argue
And Bel armed us
She taught you how to fire
That gun she gave you
So different than the
Wide eyed
Naïve boy
From a few months ago
She didn’t give me a gun
I didn’t need one to kill
Before I killed him
Your father had called for
Help
We could hear them
Helicopters
Sirens
They were telling us to
Come out unarmed
Like they wouldn’t
Shoot on sight
And when they stormed the
Doors
Bel blew them apart
An estimated
Two hundred troops were
Waiting for us outside
But the smell of blood
Set me off again
And you let me go
And they all died
Two hundred people
In less than five minutes
But you all protected me
And calmed me down
You didn’t argue when they
Shot someone
There was a certain fire in
Your eyes
You were protecting your
Friends
And me
Your love
When we made it to that
First town
And the people tried to
Capture us
Use the government’s
Weapons against them
You let me burn it down
Despite the horrible animal
Inside my mind
You still loved me
That’s what happened
Every time we met
Resistance
Total annihilation
But somehow the
Children were always
Spared
We had planned to go
To the border
Start a new life in a new
Country
But then when we
Came to that big city the
One you hear about all
The time
This time they were ready
For us
Soldiers in armor and
Heavy machine guns
We were separated from the
Others
Running down this empty
Street
That’s when they got you
Bullet though the shoulder
Another through your back
And when you fell
They got me too
But I didn’t feel it
Because I guess that is
What true love is
--------------------------------
But as we lay here
Bleeding out on the ground
At least I got
To meet
You
--------------------------------
Mish and Teylar saved us
They found some people
Who wanted to help us
They gave us a ride to the
Border
Ariden and Bel joined us a
Day later
The doctors didn’t ask any
Questions
And today we start this new
Life in a new land
After the
Apocalypse
