The Bigger Picture
People here don’t see the bigger picture
They think this is all they will ever have
“You have peaked in high school my darlings”
because the truth is
it’s not about who wears UGG boots and Victoria’s Secret
the car you drive or the locker you have
not even about your friends because
in all honesty, you won’t miss them at all
and they definitely won’t miss you
There are not many options in a small town like this
You find someone that it is convenient to be around
Someone in the same classes as you
You learn to like them so you dont have to spend your weekends alone
Even if you know that everything they say is a lie
My favorite is over hearing kids in the hallway
boasting about how drunk and high
they will get this weekend
just shaking off past M.I.Ps like they were some kind of right of passage
because really, in this town, they are
Teachers, so ignorant about who students really are
so blind when it comes to their own children
that they’re the ones hosting parties and doing the most damage
sympathetic am I for the girls that wear clothes two sizes too small
for they think the amount of skin they show will determine their place here
the girls that spend an hour extra in the morning
hiding themselves in makeup and jewelry
because let’s be honest
here, looks are everything
the things I have learned here are lessons I will never forget
but they have nothing to do with math, science or english
they have to do with survival and self worth
How to fly under the radar and realize that I’m above all of this madness
you may be looking up at me
thinking in your head that I am a hypocrite or I have no room to talk
but swallow your pride and look in the mirror
so you can realize
that this was about you
