The Room
The humid room,
Warm smiles passed back and forth,
Groups of people laughing at uninteresting jokes,
A habit of the atmosphere.
Unnoticing, unconcerned,
Uncaring.
He searches as a bat circling the night sky.
Dim hallways lead to rooms full of people
And emptiness.
Silently, he moves
Wishes going ungranted
Time turning seconds to minutes.
One final hope lost in the darkness.
Nothing changes.
Friends get closer as he slips further.
Soon the soft light is smothered by those brighter.
Just passing through
To somewhere safer,
Quieter,
Happier.
