High // Low
Some things feel like pure god don’t they?
When life has a bit of mercy and all of a sudden
You’re on top of the world
You are in the arctic at the highest point at the tip of the planet
Where all the longitude lines congregate
Hoping you don’t fall through to the center.
Kids used to always say you could dig your way to China
How far did you get in your back yard
With a shovel you found in the garage
Before you hit a water line
And your parents found out?
Because you can’t dig that far.
How high were you in the trees
When your mother found you up there
And demanded you be on the ground again
Did it take you a long time to realize that
It’s harder to come down than to go up?
Did you get higher on the pills they gave you
Or the atmospheric difference up in the clouds
While you’re climbing skyscrapers in big cities?
Have you gotten to the bottom of the world yet
Have you gotten to China or have you just found yourself
In a mess of dirt, life, and people
Where you can get to the top
And you can get to the bottom
But for some reason it doesn’t feel safe to stand
Somewhere in the middle.
