A Woeful Grandchild
It was in the middle of Summer
When you decided to leave
I couldn’t wrap my head around it
Convinced it was just a dream
That dream became reality
I had to accept that you were gone
I couldn’t bring myself to do
To admit it just felt wrong
Laid in a room for all to see
The best dressed out of all
The rest of the summer came and went
Then we wandered into Fall
The first was rough without you
We had to celebrate your birth
when you were much too far away
Instead of visiting your house
We had to visit your grave
It’s Winter now
The snow is falling and the bells are ringing
There’s still an emptiness inside me
Is it you, could it be?
Christmas was your holiday
We always came by you
Now that you are gone
Traditions are new
We ring in the New Year
With a loving kiss and hug
I look up and whisper “ Happy New Year”
I know that you can hear me from above
After a gloomy, cold winter
Everything is coming back to life
The flowers are blooming
The sun is shining
The birds are chirping
Spring is here
The only thing that’s missing
is your presence not near.
An ode to Grandma
From a woeful grandchild
Missing you more each day
I wish I could still visit you
But you weren’t here to stay.

This piece was inspired by the passing of my grandmother almost 5 years ago. I was assigned to write in Elegy in my English class, so this is what I wrote.
