Walking down the road
He saw changes in things he never saw a long time ago
But desire to see those fearful sites he just couldn't let go
Stumbling across that scarred tree
Slapped him in the face with so many memories
Wait, wait, wait.Stop, holdup, rewind
Lets turn the dial back so we can understand
This story takes place 15 years ago where it all began
Going to a school called Devon that prepared you to become a military man

A tree once used for training
Phineas jumps, to him symbolizing war
To his friends they surely thought he was done for
Everyone chickened out to jump except for one boy
When Phineas saw Gene beside him in the water he was overwhelmed with joy
Those two were more than friends, they were roommates
They have their moments but Gene has more of an internal debate

At Headmasters Party, Phineas argued about the war in between the states
Something catches Mr. Patch-Withers eye
Instead of a belt there was a tie
What disrespect
Gene thought for sure he knew what was coming next
Yelling, screaming, anything to bring Gene happiness
Nothing happened caused him to feel jealous and envious

As time past, Phineas was the cause for Genes trouble
On top of a branch Gene was trying to balance himself; struggling
Lost his balance and starting tumbling
A hand shot out saving his life
In his mind, Phineas would be the reason he goes under the knife

They say the heart is treacherous
Also life is precious
Gene showed himself not generous or feelings of tenderness
Causing Phineas to fall to his death showed him to be murderous
With a broken leg, Phineas went back to his hometown
Gene visited, but guilt got caught in his throat ; he was going to drown
Tried to tell the truth to Phineas but he told him to shut up and frowned

People wanted to know the truth
Friends put in their two cents
And when Gene was questioned he got tense
Brinker accused Gene but put up a big defense
One day, Gene went to his room and... Oh no this doesn't make sense
In Genes mind he wondered what this could represent
Now are you filled with suspense?
In his room lounged Phineas his favorite gent

With Phineas leg healing
Things were getting better
Until Gene received a letter
Everything went downhill from there
Met with Leper and pushed the psycho out his chair
Brinker takes Phineas and Gene to First Building for prayer
Gene felt something wasn't right in the air

Brinker was slick
It was really a meeting to investigate Phineas's fall
Phineas did his best to stall
Then he made his own judgement call
He didn't want to know the truth anymore as he began to swear
Bursted out the door and fell clumsily down the stairs
A crowd surround the area doing their best to handle him with great care
With Gene in the background watching the scene with despair

You would think the sun would start to shine
That throughout these turning of events, things would be fine
Why would I lie if I said that at the end of this rollercoaster ride, Phineas had not survived, but actually died
What's even worse is not once had Gene cried

For Gene that was his release
Or to others it can be considered a separate peace
