First Day Jitters
As I walk up to the gates,
With my heart in my throat,
I see the other students,
All drifting afloat.
Everyone paints their face,
With false emotions and pride,
A faux exterior, in hope for a reprise
People rashly take the time.
Just going through the motions,
Keeeping up the mask,
Hiding all my emotions,
Worries from the past.
Today is the day,
The decider of the year,
To work out who is who,
Put the rules in gear.
Classes and teachers, foe and friend,
Society, structure and class,
Minority, popular, and wallflower,
All are such a popular farce,
On the outside we differ,
Brands, designer or vintage,
But on the inside we're the same,
All trudging our paths that we've made.
Wrong decisions still haunt us,
Pranks and wild parties,
Although last year is over,
We are reminded by our memories.
One chance to start anew,
First day is the clean slate,
When everyone picks up their chalk,
To begin to rewrite their fate.
