I Am A Man
Don’t you understand?
I’m a man
The core of my being screams it
Every part of my inner self says it
My heart, my heart has it written all over it
Don’t you understand?
I’m a man
My soul is painted blue like a prince’s
I stand proud like a king in battle
I open doors like a gentleman, not a gentlelady
Don’t you understand?
I’m a man
My respect demands a certain level
My ears hate the title Ms.
I prefer the verb of he better than she
Do you not understand?
I’m a man
Every time you treat me otherwise it hurts
You take part of my pride with words
Because you do not respect my heart
Do you not understand?
I am a man
“Don’t judge a book by its cover”
Well, how are you defining me?
By the undesired bumps on my chest and space in my pants
Do you not understand?
I am a man
I dream of being the king of my home
Of treating my queen with my life
Of caring for my princes & princesses like a father should
Do you not understand?
I am a man
May the Lord forgive me of such hate towards my body
For my heart speaks louder than this cover
For my thoughts have battled with this for years
Do you not understand?
I am a man
I have pained enough to know real strength
My muscles are not toned, but that will change
I have carried more than myself in life
Do You Not Understand?
I Am A Man
I ditch shirts & hate dresses
Make up has no place on my face
A tuxedo I will wear to my wedding
Do You Not Understand?
I Am A Man
My pen prints it in every paper
My walk takes it in every road
My words take it in any tone
Do You Not Understand?
I Am A Man
My heart smiles when she calls me “Handsome”
The world stops when she calls me her man
& the way she loves me takes me far away
Do You Not Understand?
Don’t you understand?
I am a man
I’m a man
I Am A Man
You need to understand that I am a man
