Valley in the Girl

the sun poured from her soul;
people wore shades
her eyes were sapphire skies
but too often it rained
there was a meadow in her mind
fenced in all around
veins carried cardinal rivers
flowing to a heart that beat
the rhythm of wings
wind burst from her lungs
and flew over mountains
that trapped her
and no one could see
the valley in the girl
