The Back Porch
This view from the back porch
Is one that very few get to enjoy.
Out in the country, where there is no light
Or distraction of the city to ploy
And squander everything that is right.
Skyscrapers and high-rises hide
The beauty a back porch can provide.
Frost has come and gone,
Taking the once luscious garden with it.
The dying plants wilt
And sink lower and lower with every cold hit
Because for winter they were not built.
Now they crumple and burn,
But next spring they will be stronger when they return.
A ladybug crawls up the wall,
Headed where-I do not know,
But it is busy hurrying to survive
Before winter comes and it begins to snow.
I know that it will stay alive,
Despite the harsh weather and its poor chances,
Because with risk it dances.
Out west, the sun begins to set
Showing that the end of day is near.
The clouds spread out in orange and pink,
The sun’s outline is clear,
And it is the perfect time to stop, breathe, and think.
Admiring the dying plants, a ladybug, and the torch-
It’s nice to just sit on the back porch.
