Paradise
My favorite place on earth. Nowhere could make me happier. The sun rises and sets at the same time, the temperature never goes below 50, and everyone is happier. Florida is the place for me.
I scan the beach, the sun blindingly shining into my eyes. My eyelashes were damp, almost invisible droplets formed on each hair, every time I blinked a drop trailed down my cheek. I saw the silhouettes of boats out in the horizon, the large cruise ships making near tidal waves for the smaller boats. I saw couples, hand in hand, walking down the beach. Their feet kicking up the grainy sand and then it would drop and lay as still as before. Little kids sat in the sand playing with buckets and digging holes with shovels, as their moms tanned nearby. Umbrellas lined up and down the beach, their colors contrasting with the baby blue sky. Surfers wearing neon colors emerged from the water, their hair dripping and their suits clinging to their bodies. Babies rested in tents shading them from the blinding sun. And if it was possible I could almost see happiness in the air.
As I listened I heard birds talking to each other in their own language. A great “CAW-CAWing” noises could be heard echoing throughout the beach. The crashing of the waves on the shore provided a gentle rhythm soothing my soul. The cruise ships motor could be heard, only slightly audible over the sound of the waves. Couples laughed together, their giggles harmonious and almost musical. Little kids screamed for their moms, “MOM I WANT THE ICE CREAM NOW” and their moms just shaking their heads in response.
I could feel excitement quivering throughout my body. I was so excited for another beautiful day in paradise. I could feel contentedness spreading through my body, making a path with my blood. I could feel it warming up my body from my head to my toes. Pulsing in blood. Each individual sand stuck in the colored polish, and I wiggled my toes feeling the warmth beneath me. The sun warmed my back and for the first time in a while, I smiled.
Florida, my home away from home, my favorite place in the world. Where the sun never gets cold, and the drinks never get warm.
