Realities
Book in my lap,
couch beneath my body,
comfortable in the safety of literature.
Trance, broken
by the sudden cry
and a rapid thump, thump.
Feet fly
over frigid linoleum;
tranquility destroyed
by imminent possibilities.
Around the corner,
at the bottom of the stairs,
I see her:
chest still,
face stunned,
bruises forming.
Time stops,
my heart beats,
icy-paralysis
until I see her smile,
stretching across her face, from eyes to mouth,
and I am comforted by the reality
of her warm breath
heaving against my shoulder.
